Sports Premium

At Middleton St Mary's all children have access to 2 hours of Physical Education a week. Each Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 class is allocated one hour lesson in the MUGA/on the yard or field and 1 hour in the hall. We are currently using GetSet4PE scheme which has provided staff with lots of new ideas and a variety of different sports for the children learn.

 

We continue to update our sports equipment to ensure each child has the correct equipment for the lesson and to ensure fun, engaging lessons. We provide equipment for break and lunch times to promote physical activity. The school has bought into the Leeds School partnership which gives us access to lots of different sporting events which are aimed at all abilities.

The Leeds School partnership also offers Pofessional Development opportunities to enable the professional development of our own staff. We also invest in sports coaches who deliver lessons and provide daily extra-curricular activities. 

We are committed to improving the ooutcomes for children in swimming. The whole of Year 4 access swimming lessons throughout the year at John Charles Swimming Baths. In January 2026, the governors hired a pop-up pool for 5 weeks so that Year 6 and Year 5 could access daily additional swimming lessons. 

 

What is the purpose of the School Sport and PE Premium?

The dedicated primary PE and Sport Premium goes directly to primary school headteachers so that they can decide how best to use it to provide sporting activities for pupils. Primary schools around England can use the premium to:

• up-skill teachers to improve the quality of sport lessons
• invest in quality coaching
• provide more opportunities for pupils to take part in inter-school competitions
• offer more after-school clubs
• purchase better equipment
• to encourage more pupils to enjoy sport
• improve sport teaching for pupils with Special Educational Needs
• deliver holiday and weekend activities
• boost Change4Life clubs, helping pupils build a healthier lifestyle
• improve academic outcomes for pupils
• empower pupils to have the confidence to lead active play activities / intra-school competition
